Dhalsim is a character from the Street Fighter series of games, first debuting in Street Fighter II as one of the eight characters originally available. He is an Indian master of yoga who is able to conjure fire and stretch his limbs; he has longer arms in contrast to his weaker waist and abdomen, has three red marks on his face, and wears yellow saffron shorts usually tightened by a tied rope. In earlier Street Fighter games, he wore a necklace adorned with the skulls of children who died from a plague, reminiscent of the Hindu Kapalikas, or "skull-bearers"; Street Fighter 6 replaces this necklace with a non-specific golden one, alongside giving him a white bindi on his forehead. Street Fighter V also updated his appearance, giving him a long white beard (also in Street Fighter 6), alongside having him wear a turban, previously seen in pre-fight sequences in the Street Fighter Alpha titles.
Dhalsim is a stoic, serious, and humble man. He stays focused while fighting and questions his decision to fight, and constantly sides with the poor or oppressed, primarily fighting to raise money for his poverty-stricken people. His Street Fighter II ending shows him retiring from fighting due its conflict with his pacifist beliefs, but the Street Fighter IV series shows him returning to fight to investigate a dam disrupting the flow of water to his village. In Street Fighter 6, he feels that he has been "lead astray" from a path of righteousness as a yoga master, never fighting for direct justice but instead protection, still using yoga as a guidance. Despite his stoic and focused personality, there have been moments where he has felt anger or annoyance; he gets annoyed at Rufus in the Street Fighter IV games for comparing him to an alien, and has a grudge against Balrog for killing one of his sacred elephants.
Dhalsim has a wife named Sally and a son named Datta, the former of whom appears when Dhalsim fights in the Street Fighter Alpha games. His ability to stretch his limbs was inspired by the Zoom Punch ability from early JoJo's Bizarre Adventure chapters, and his use of yoga to fight features a heavy resemblance to a character from the 1976 film Master of the Flying Guillotine. He has made various crossover appearances, including the SNK vs. Capcom and Marvel vs. Capcom games, alongside a skin for Rayman in Brawlhalla, and a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that can be summoned with the cores of Fire Man and Great Tiger.
In M.U.G.E.N, Dhalsim has been made by various authors, with many of them basing him off his Street Fighter Alpha or crossover appearances. Many versions expand upon his pre-existing abilities, with some like RajaaBoy's giving him moves such as a repeated head bash or a long-range command grab, alongside others expanding upon it for comedic effect, such as NRF's "Dhalsim with clones" giving him the ability to clone himself, or Brergrsart's "Stretchy Limbs" variants giving him significantly longer range than he usually has.
Manobaru's version[]
Manobaru's take on Dhalsim is primarily based on his Marvel vs. Capcom appearances, primarily his earlier ones in X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. He takes the role of a traditional limb zoner with a combination of projectiles and long-range Normals, like in those games, but also has extras such as a new drill kick Hyper and voice clips from the Street Fighter EX series.
