An EX Special, also known as an EX Move, is a powered-up variant of a Special attack that costs some Power to use. The term "EX" originates from the Street Fighter series, where they were initially introduced in Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact.
EX Specials are generally activated by performing the command input of their regular Special counterparts, but substituting a single button press for a two-button press. For example, if a Special is activated with , the EX Special variant would be activated with . EX Specials also tend to include extra visual cues to let the player know if the command was successful, usually indicated with the character flashing yellow during the startup frames of the move.
As one might expect, EX Specials sometimes deal more damage than their regular counterparts. However, EX Specials may sometimes include other properties that set them apart from their regular counterparts, among them include:
- Increased damage
- Altered movement
- Faster startup
- Faster recovery
- Longer invincibility frames
- Projectile invincibility
- Knockdown (on Specials that don't normally knock down)
- Armor
- Multiple-hitting Projectiles (on projectile Specials)
