Hisame's second version of the Megami Ibunroku Persona protagonist is a complete rework, with new sprites, a revamped control scheme, a completely new set of special moves and Hypers, and new mechanics, such as Persona 4 Arena's Persona Break.
P1 Hero is a four-button character, using Ⓐ, Ⓑ, Ⓒ for normals, and Ⓧ for various evasive maneuvers.
Some of P1 Hero's attacks involve his Persona, Seimen Kongou. If one of these moves is cancelled into another move that also uses it, it will perform the second move where the first one ended, and recovery is significantly reduced, to the point where the P1 Hero can attack alongside it.
P1 Hero possesses the ability to chain normals together in a manner similar to BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. Any Ⓐ normal can be chained into any Ⓑ or Ⓒ normal, including any part of the Ⓐ or Ⓑ autocombos.
In general, P1 Hero has a high combo ability. In addition to chain combos, many of his special moves allow for followups, either via super-cancelling or linking normals afterwards. Also, many of his normals can be jump-cancelled, allowing for ground-to-air combos.
P1 Hero has a unique resource in the form of five Emperor Arcana cards at the bottom of the screen. If Seimen Kongou gets hit during an attack, one card is removed. If all cards are gone, all attacks that use Personas, including normals, are disabled until all five cards are replenished, which happens over time.
If P1 Hero's Life is less than 30%, he enters 覚醒 mode. During 覚醒 mode, the Power meter fills automatically, and damage scaling is decreased, allowing for more damage during combos.
There's a bug involving P1 Hero's standing Ⓒ normals. If they hit an opponent who's been knocked down, they may return to their standing state above or below the stage. If the opponent jumps or is hit while in this state, they will return to normal.
P1 Hero's AI can be configured, but on its default setting, it's incredibly brutal. It attacks almost constantly, and can convert off of any stray hit for big, damaging combos. Attempting to block its attacks causes it to start incorporating its throws into combos, and it immediately starts blocking when it gets attacked.
P1 Hero's AI will always attempt to activate, regardless of whether or not a player is controlling them, even in modes where AI usually isn't active. This can be prevented by pressing (if player 1) or (if player 2).
