Despite using sprites from Namco x Capcom, Klonoa plays more like a Guilty Gear character with an emphasis on playing keepaway and pulling off aerial combos. Unfortunately, his moveset is rather barren, and his combo ability is pretty limited as a result.
Klonoa is a seven-button character that does not appear to follow any particular fighting game button layout. Ⓐ is used for Klonoa's only Special and for one Hyper, Ⓑ is only used for two Assist-based Hypers, Ⓒ is a Parry-like move, Ⓧ, Ⓨ and Ⓩ are used for melee attacks, and Ⓢ is used as a power charge and for activating an Instant Kill, ふつくしい・・. Although he is able to crouch, Klonoa does not have crouching normals, instead reverting to his standing Normals when attempting to attack.
Klonoa's gameplay style takes some mechanics from the Guilty Gear games, including a Burst move and an Instant Kill. By pressing Ⓧ and Ⓩ, バースト is activated; if the move connects, Klonoa immediately gains 3000 Power and the opponent is knocked down and back. However, バースト can only be used once every round, making it a fairly risky move to use. Once at 3000 Power, Klonoa is able to use ふつくしい・・, a strange unblockable fullscreen attack that immediately knocks out the opponent when used.
Klonoa is able to cancel his Normals in a linear fashion; Ⓧ can be cancelled into Ⓨ, which can then cancel into Ⓩ. Klonoa's Ⓩ also doubles as a Launcher even as an aerial attack, and has heavy knockback making it good for keepaway. However, Normals cannot be cancelled into Specials or Hypers, heavily limiting his combo ability.
ブーメラン is Klonoa's only Special that doesn't require Power to use, with him throwing a projectile attack that has mild launching capabilities. However, the projectile itself moves slower than Klonoa's own movement speed and its launching ability is not quite was effective as his Ⓩ Normal. 大回転 is a good close-range attack that hits numerous times and can be controlled mid-attack using and , though in practice this control isn't very useful due to its slow movement speed. The move also hits OTG and launches, allowing Klonoa to link the attack into itself.
The rest of Klonoa's Specials are all Assist attacks. ヘルパー遠距離 is a decent long-range move with the interesting property that it can be used even if it's already active, meaning it can be linked into itself. ヘルパー近距離 is a move that changes depending on how much Power Klonoa has when attempting to use it; both forms of the move are short-range melee attacks. When used with 2000 Power, it deals additional damage at the cost of changing from a high-hitting move to a mid-hitting move, meaning the opponent can block it while crouching. マシンガン is a counter move; when using it, Klonoa will flash blue for a few seconds. If the opponent attacks during this state, the move activates and hits the opponent three times in quick succession. The attack portion comes out immediately after the opponent's attack connects, making it effectively unblockable in practice.
His sole hyper is Shun Goku Satsu, an unblockable throw move where Klonoa dashes towards the opponent to grab them. If it connects, it deals half of the opponent's Life in damage. However, Klonoa's dash speed for this move is fairly slow, and due to his size an opponent can easily jump over Klonoa and dodge the attack entirely.
Klonoa's A.I. is quite aggressive, rushing directly towards the opponent and racking up damage fairly quickly with combos, usually consisting of his Normals and 大回転. He is also very adept at blocking, parrying moves with ease and sometimes using バースト as an anti-air of sorts. However, Klonoa will rarely use his Assists or Shun Goku Satsu, and will never use ふつくしい・・. In addition, Klonoa's A.I. is able to cancel 大回転 at any point, and will occasionally even cancel it with itself and effectively waste 1000 Power.
