The King of Fighters |
Kyo Kusanagi is the main protagonist of The King of Fighters, first appearing in The King of Fighters '94 as the leader of the Japan Team and appearing in multiple games in the franchise since. He is a cocky, delinquent high school student who represents the Kusanagi Clan, wielding pyrokinetic powers and usually appearing in a jacket and jeans. He is also a mutual rival of Iori Yagami due to a misunderstanding that led his clan to make a pact with the Orochi for more power.
Kyo was initially designed as a character who would rival the Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting characters in style, initially being dressed in martial arts clothing commonly seen in fighting games at the time; this later changed, as another designer wanted Kyo to be an "overwhelming rival" for Street Fighter's Ryu and have the benefit of appealing to a broad demographic. Kyo's story takes place after surpassing his father Saisyu as the clan's leader, where he started to compete in the King of Fighters tournament with his team; in the Orochi Saga he saw the rise and fall of Rugal Bernstein and the resurrection of Orochi, in the NESTS Saga he saw himself taken and cloned, and in the Tales of Ash Saga, he was asked to investigate suspicious activities concerning Orochi, which later exposed him to the plans of Ash Crimson and Those from the Past. His story continues in The King of Fighters XIV, where his father summons him and his friends to inform them about Verse, who is said to cause untold chaos; after winning the King of Fighters tournament of that year, he was sent to Hungary to deal with another case of a resurrected Orochi.
In M.U.G.E.N , Kyo Kusanagi has been made by various authors, based on his various appearances in multiple games; most versions are based on his Orochi Saga appearances, but others have made versions based on his NESTS Saga and Ash Saga appearances. Kyo's prototype design, Syo Kirishima, has also been made for the engine.
Jmorphman's version[]
Based on the works of PotS, Jmorphman's version of the hot-blooded Kusanagi makes his way into the battlefield with his excellent and recognizable close combat. He is mainly based on The King of Fighters '98 and Capcom vs. SNK 2, but it seems that he has taken a few keys from his many clones by including modes similar to his past appearances - one being Kusanagi, based on his older appearances, and the other being a more modern mode dubbed "EX Kyo".
