The King of Fighters |
Shingo Yabuki is a reoccuring character in The King of Fighters, making his first appearance in The King of Fighters '97 and making constant appearances in the series, ranging from appearing as a playable character to minor cameos in game stories. He is a passionate fan of Kyo Kusanagi, commonly wearing a blue variant of the school uniform he used to wear and even owning a pair of gloves formerly owned by him.
After watching the televised 1996 King of Fighters tournament, Shingo became a big fan of Kyo, and after finding out that they went to the same school, tried to get Kyo to teach him his moves. He entered the 1997 tournament after a year of training and lost, but was rewarded his pair of gloves from Kyo for his efforts, and would wear them for most of his time in the King of Fighters tournaments. In 1999, he was one of many who was worried about Kyo's disappearance, and was asked to help Benimaru Nikaido alongside K' and his partner Maxima to find his whereabouts. He learnt in the finals that NESTS was responsible for his disappearance, and aided Benimaru in stopping them in the next few years of the tournament, but his luck would constantly vary before being offered an apprenticeship by Kyo's father Saisyu. In 2003's tournament, which was the first tournament after the end of NESTS, Shingo entered with Benimaru and Goro Daimon, but was angered at their elimination before considering himself Kyo's rival. The next tournament year, Shingo promises to Chizuru Kagura that he would unite Kyo and Iori Yagami to stop the newfound Ash Crimson, but after the end he is injured by Iori due to his awakening into the Riot of the Blood state, leaving him inable to compete in future tournaments.
In M.U.G.E.N, Shingo Yabuki has been made by various authors, including Vans and Infinite, based mostly on his appearances in the Dream Match games The King of Fighters '98 and The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match, with some versions from the late 2000s and early 2010s being based on his appearance in The King of Fighters XI. Shingo also appears as an assist for Joey The Tricky's self-insert character.
Vans' version[]
This take on Shingo is based on The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match, but takes a few creative liberties with how certain moves work. He is a close-range character that can deal high combo damage, but has the weakness of a majority of his moves being unsafe. However, he does have some uncommon advantages in certain moves, like Nie Togi, an unblockable attack only used in close proximities, and Kototsuki Mikansei, a running combo that can be used to pursuit on downed opponents.
