Sonic The Hedgehog Series Logo (2008-Present)

Sonic the Hedgehog is a Japanese franchise created and owned by Sega, starring the titular hedgehog. It was created by the company's at-the-time developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima and Hirokazu Yasuhara in 1991. The series began specifically on June 21st, 1991, with the eponymous game, Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, with Sega's then-main purpose to have a mascot that they could use to compete with Nintendo's Mario. Since the first game's release, the franchise has spanned across video games, animated films and TV shows, a trilogy of live-action films, comic books and merchandise. The mainline games are platformers mostly developed by Sonic Team, while spin-off games, typically outsourced to other studios, encompass various other genres. Despite certain titles such as Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) being notorious for their poor reviews and/or rushed development, the Sonic the Hedgehog series nonethless remains one of the most iconic and influential series within the video game industry.

The series' main premise tells the story of an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog named Sonic the Hedgehog, who has the special ability of running ultimately undetermined super speeds (he claims to be faster than the speed of sound), as he fights against his arch-enemy, Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist who seeks to take over the world and rebuild it in his image, typically involving some sort of amusement park called "Eggmanland".
