Subcon (known as Mushroom Kingdom II in the Super Smash Bros. series) is the main setting of Super Mario Bros. 2. It is a peaceful dream of the Subcons (the species that inhabit Subcon). Believed to be Mario's dream, it is said to be a vast dream world that is part of a larger subconsciousness of the Mushroom Kingdom's inhabitants.
In M.U.G.E.N, a version of Subcon has been made by Doorhenge; it is similar to the Mushroom Kingdom II stage in the Super Smash Bros. series, but contains some necessary adjustments to account for a 2D fighting game environment.
Doorhenge's version[]
Doorhenge's Subcon is a loose recreation of the Mushroom Kingdom II stage from the Super Smash Bros. series using tilesets from both Super Mario Bros. 2 and its Super Mario All-Stars port, with each tileset being assigned to separate interchangeable sprite files that share a single definition file. The most discernible distinction this stage has over Mushroom Kingdom II is the raised central platform, which puts it at the same elevation as the two surrounding landmasses and thus makes for a level stage floor; another, related change is the logs that used to flow down from the river in Mushroom Kingdom II now being permanently attached to either side of the central platform, so as to bridge the gap between it and the surrounding landmasses. Numerous baddies from Super Mario Bros. 2 are present on this stage, with a Pidgit flying the length of it on a carpet, Birdo periodically peeking out from behind a hill on the right landmass, a Bob-omb sitting on the left landmass while a Shy Guy paces back and forth behind him, and a high speed flying Phanto making extremely brief appearances in various areas of the background. Though the stage utilises parallaxing for the two side landmasses, the central platform has none of this applied to it, which leads to a slightly jarring contrast between the 3D effect of the parallaxed landmasses and the 2D looking central platform.
