Tartarus is a location from the Shin Megami Tensei spin-off series Persona, first appearing in Revelations: Persona and later re-appearing in Persona 3. In Revelations: Persona, it is a minor part of the larger Thanatos Tower, but plays a more major role in Persona 3 as it is a large tower that appears each night at the Gekkoukan High School, and has a randomized structure every time it forms.

The site was originally a research center owned by the Kirijo Group to perform experiments on shadows and eventually discover the end of the world through the Death Arcana, before it was scrambled after a senior researcher stopped their efforts and destroyed the lab to create the new building. Students of the Gekkoukan High School, which the original lab was rebuilt into, soon form the club SEES (Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad) to explore the tower and train in fighting shadows to defeat stronger ones found in the Full Moon Hour. After their efforts, the students learn that the tower could be used to summon the demon Nyx after twelve shadows are reunited to form Death, which the students attempt to prevent.

In M.U.G.E.N, Tartarus has been made by Luneth, with their version of the stage focusing on the rooftop of the tower, which is where the final boss fight of Persona 3 takes place.

The stage takes place at the rooftop of the tower, which is where the boss fight against the Nyx Avatar in Persona 3 takes place. It uses high-resolution, digitized graphics to simulate the 3D environments of the game, although the graphics in question use M.U.G.E.N's default 256-color method and thus have limited colors. The stage mainly has a monochrome motif with a green tint to suggest a dark setting; in the background is a night-time sky near a full moon with slowly-scrolling groups of clouds, alongside a few faintly visible crossed lines. The fighters in the stage stand in the center of the rooftop floor, which is surrounded by open, metal pillars that emit black particles toward the moon, which appear as such due to subtractive transparency. The stage has a moderate horizontal boundary, but the vertical boundary is tall enough to support Super Jumps, although the camera of the stage focuses more on the horizontal boundary than the vertical one.
