  • I may be coming off as incredibly whiny judging from my title alone, but after so many months of managing and adding to my MUGEN I'm really in the mood to tear that horrendous excuse of a downloading portal a new one. And something tells me a certain amount of you here feel a similiar (if not the same) hatred for MUGEN ARCHIVE as I do. I would love to know about any earlier forum threads here ranting about the ARCHIVE as well.

How do I put my thoughts correctly? Well you see, ARCHIVE isn't really as much of an actual downloading site for MUGEN content as much as it is just one gigantic middle finger to anyone who simply couldn't find that one character/stage/screenpack/etc. anywhere else BUT the MUGEN ARCHIVE. The site's name makes it's aim fairly obvious: To act as a permanent mirror for MUGEN content that can't be found elsewhere either yet or anymore. But the way it functions makes it one of the most arbitrary, pointless and anger-inducing things ever.

First of all, it really REALLY hates unregistered users who dare to try to download anything from it. I'm well aware that it has gotten slightly better by allowing unregistered users to download things with a file size below 10MB, but stupidly enough, any and all content there that has a size below 10MB I was able to find EASILY in any other content hosting site like Free For All (which appears to hate ARCHIVE's guts like I do) or this one right here (I don't know how you guys feel about ARCHIVE though...).

Don't believe me? Here's an example (albeit a poor one...): This character here, which is a bad one, yes, but I'm one hell of a connoisseur in bad MUGEN characters, so I really wanted to get my hands on this one for no reason. The only site that had this character back when I first found him was, indeed, MUGEN ARCHIVE and that was at the time where the site outright prevented all unregistered users from downloading anything. And now a few months later (I... can't really remember) when I found out that ARCHIVE now allows some downloads for unregistered users I went back to Bully in the Launderette's wiki page here, only to find out that now it's hosted on MEGA.

You see what I mean? This isn't the only example of this that I experienced of course, and it kinda appears that people hate ARCHIVE so much they're eager to get their hands on the stuff it hosts and mirror them elsewhere where people can actually download them properly. That may be just me though... or maybe not.

Meanwhile, there are characters I've been eager to get my hands on that ONLY exist there. For example, it turns out that someone actually MUGENised Touhou's Shinmyoumaru Sukuna (That tiny purple haired final boss of Double Dealing Character sitting in the bowl), who I always wanted to have a MUGEN creation of... BUT, it only exists on ARCHIVE and I can't download it at all (lessening, or kinda worsening this is that she's only available for Mugen 1.1 anyway, which I don't use at all, I use 1.0)

I wouldn't even be complaining about all this if I were to have a registered account there myself, but... second, and WORST of all, the site's registration is screwed beyond belief. I attempted to register myself there for like EIGHT times (I even made new e-mail addresses just to make sure) and all the times I filled out everything it then said something like "this e-mail address is banned from this site, if you believe this was in mistake, contact the site administrator"... yeah, no. I use AOL, and all my alternative e-mail accounts are on AOL as well, so maybe it has something to do with ARCHIVE not liking AOL that much... maybe it's even a bug, but I seriously doubt that, as I've been trying to register there for month after month... it sure should have worked after a while. And mind you, I didn't do anything wrong on ARCHIVE, mainly because I NEVER HAD AN ACCOUNT THERE TO BEGIN WITH.

So registering there doesn't seem to work for me... I should consider making a new e-mail address on another site entirely just to get there, whether it's gonna work or not... but that may not be as much of a salvage either, as I have heard that apparently ARCHIVE also hates users that don't contribute to their site much and may even outright ban them after not actually uploading anything there for a while... now that would be a whole new level of retarded.

Third, I find it highly suspicious (and disgusting) that ARCHIVE chose to add AdFly to the content they host on their site. It's seemingly not that big of a deal, but I can't think of any other content hosting site that does this... EVER. It makes it appear that ARCHIVE really loves profitting off of other people's work. See, they don't just archive stuff there, they just look around for all content they could find to host there, so it only adds to my perspective. I may come across as some kind of conspiracy theorist, but I find it highly hypocritical of them to leech off of other people's work and yet call all unregistered users "leechers" themselves for daring to just come to download something from there.

Really, I can't think of anything else to say, I just hate MUGEN ARCHIVE with a passion and I think I can be somewhat confident that it's not just me who thinks the same. I can't possibly see how I'm the only one experiencing that banned e-mail issue. That's just ARCHIVE pissing me off. Again, any MUGEN content I try to download and can only find there may as well be lost forever until someone kind enough mirrors it somewhere else. True, you CAN download things there with a limit, but those same things anyone can download have immediately been mirrored elsewhere on much better file hosting sites like MediaFire, 4Shared or MEGA, making ARCHIVE's purpose nearly nonexistent.

Anyone who actually used it probably has a much better idea than I do, but I just despise it like hell. And this forum post was made for no other reason other than to blow off some steam.

If you however just so happen to feel the same way I do, or think I'm a whiny piece of cow dung, please comment below. I would love to hear from ya!

    • I just checked and shinmyoumaru is hosted on onedrive, the link can be found at the touhou collection on MFFA

Guess what? I've also downloaded some stuff there and hosted it on MediaFire if the only link available was at the archive so I could put the MediaFire link on a page for a character I wanted to document.

I still hate it every time I download something there though. Suddenly using ad.fly is one big dick move and I hated downloading something from the archive ever since.

    • You're certainly not the only one who feels this way, though you are late to hop on the bandwagon. To answer one potential concern, the fact that we don't link to the Archive for download purposes is not out of spite or malice, but simply because of their enforced use of adf.ly, which goes against Wikia's policy on additional advertising and is not something we want to expose our readers to due to its potential risks.

To help with your Shinmyoumaru issue, the creator's website is always a good place to check, specifically here.

    • I forgot to add on my original post that I originally did go to her OneDrive file... only to discover that she's not available there anymore. I followed her respective link on Free For All to the right OneDrive location and... not there. She only exists on ARCHIVE now, to the chagrin of every 1.1 user who loves Shinmyoumaru.

So I'm not the only one who feels that way? Probably obvious by now... but that's thing I hate about ARCHIVE, how little purpose it has nowadays and how it goes out of its way to do EVERYTHING WRONG as a content hosting site.

      PlasmoidThunder wrote:

I do realize that, it's just that I'm a fairly recent MUGEN user (I began in January 2016... yeah) and I've been willing to take ARCHIVE's crap for a long time. Eventually it reached a tipping point and I really felt like tearing it to shreds for my own pleasure. And yes, I myself consider ARCHIVE's use of adfly a purely ethical concern considering the bad image it makes of itself (as a content leecher, that is), but thanks for your insight.

And thanks for the Shinmyoumaru link, but like I said in my original post, I'm not a 1.1 user... yet, and I have no incentives to switch to it yet, but it's gonna come on time, and she'll be one of the first to go right on there. But again, thank you.

Eh, it kinda annoys me how, in those "I hate MA" posts, everyone seems to think MFFA is a complete counterpart to the archive... Just to make it a bit clear, MUGEN Archive plays both the part of the forum (MFFA's part) and the part of the hoster (MediaFire/MEGA/4shared/etc.'s part). You can't really say "MFFA is much better than the archive" without including the file hoster's part in the former :P

Alright, then I kinda messed it up a little... a lot. It's true that ARCHIVE does both the forum part and the hoster part... it's just that it does so HORRENDOUSLY.

I did however edit my original post accordingly, namely to remove the mentioned forum sites and leaving the file hosting sites mentioned in my comparison to the ARCHIVE at the end... look at it yourself, I think it should look somewhat better now.

My biggest problem with the archive is the fact it has adf.ly in it, though it's rather easy to bypass; apparently it's there to pay the server fees, but, whatever the finality, it is rather unfair to make profit off of something that isn't yours; I'd personally prefer for the site to be taken down than for it to work like that.

To be fair, I never really had any problem with registering in the website... it might be a bit rare for that to happen.

    • I honestly want the site to be taken down, making profit off freeware work that you cannot take down due to author request. Honestly it's making me reconsider continuing MUGEN.

    • So when I first got into mugen more than a year ago and I wanted to find out which characters were available in mugen and I wanted to download them mugen archive was my friend. I could quickly download whatever I wanted I saw there. Even if there were other sites, the archive had my preference. This wiki was a close second though, because of the information about the characters available there.

Then I got a bit bored with mugen and left my mugen as it is. However, when I decided to go back into mugen, the archive put adf.ly on their downloads along with other dick moves. I ignored that at first and downloaded some stuff, but then I started to dislike the archive and stopped downloading anything there that was available somewhere else. Sure, it will cost more time finding a download link, but they don't deserve it anymore.

This is why I love this wiki so much. However, if there were character that didn't have a page on the wiki, I wouldn't know about their existence in mugen, so that's why I create new pages and fill in missing gaps.

So basically... Copy 'n paste the link, then use the skipper as Silver suggested. I use the adf.ly skipper extension, but I have an account on MA so I don't really need it. I just keep it there in case I absolutely have to get something from an adf.ly link.

No, I don't mean that way; the Archive's adf.ly links usually have the format of "adf.ly/[random numbers]/[actual download link]", so you can just copy the actual download link from there.

      ~MUGEN ARCHIVE admin "Sol Badguy"

Nothing but a typical power-hungry condescening admin who thinks he's better than everyone else. THis is one of the reasons why I dispise the site.

The reason why I think the Mugen Wiki is better than the Mugen Archive is because our admins actually care about their users, rather than randomly banning people or punishing unregistered users and calling them "leechers". And not to mention the "weekend event" when downloads are disabled for "innactive users" which are the majority of their userbase. It really annoys me to no end.

Regardless of all that, I still use the site occasionally even with all these problems. It can be pretty handy finding rare files, them having admins that are corrupt is still a con from yours truly.

I have RED (From NES Godzilla Creepypasta): http://www.mediafire.com/file/bac22d3g62i543c/RED.zip I also have a Slenderman:http://www.mediafire.com/file/7195quy0k4e2zrt/Slenderman.zip and a Master Hand: http://www.mediafire.com/file/0xsgc1if1cc26s5/MasterHand.zip I have more but I'll just post those here for now. • You can post them individually on the M.U.G.E.N Collections board as long as you adhere to the board rules:

When posting releases, please follow the simple sequence of:
      >images/media (idle animation, screenshots, videos, etc.)
      >notes (whether it be creator notes or your own opinion(s) on the character)
      >download link (no adf.ly or other advertisement links)

It is also recommended that you put the creation name, creator and release date in the topic's title.

You don't have to include the release date on the collections board, since they're old releases and such isn't always known.

One work around I do for downloading things is use the AdSkipper Chrome extension so I could download my files without going through ad.fly, although it doesn't help that since i'm usually a "lurker" (as the site calls them) there, I can only download files up to 100.00 MB if I recall correctly. It also doesn't help that they do this community event thing where "lurkers" can't download anything for a limited time. You could say I have love/hate relationship with the site.

Yep, this confirms the common theory that they have massive egos. I love websites/groups that overreact to critism. It shows how insecure they really are.

And as for the main topic here, I do find MugenArchive to be very petty. They tend to do these things (heck, they're actually doing it while I'm posting this, hence why I'm even here), where they basically disable downloads with stuff like this:

      1. Sorry, downloads are currently deactivated or limited for unregistered users, due to common use of download accelerators, in violation of our terms of service. They won't be re-enabled until the site gets patched to prevent further abuse. The patch release date is not known at this time, so please consider registering an account. We apologize for the inconvenience but the priority is to maintain the site stability.

And then they do stuff like this. Despicable. http://mugenmultiverse.forumotion.com/t10551-mugen-archive-is-the-worst-site

    • It really does annoy me how they always have community weekend events for the worshippers of the website, if only there was some way to bypass the community exclusive B.S so then others can freely download the files that are exclusive there, once there is it will pretty much save so many less devoted users.

Generally speaking, the majority of content that's uploaded to MA is rehosted from somewhere else and can thus be found in its original download location; anything that's uploaded exclusively there is more often than not complete trash and not worth your time.

What gets off the worst is that they prevent "leechers" from downloading things under a certain limit, but then use ad.fly to get money. As Jotaro would say "Yare yare, you truly are the lowest scum in history."
Exactly! Why do I have to be an active member just to download a stupid file?

not to mention when you make an account and dont upload content they make this giant yellow super passive agressive notification when you visit the site that tells you to "Become an active mugen archiver now! :)"

    • I (Constructively) complained that during their "Community Weekend" events, unregistered users have more privilages than Lurkers. (For context, in those events lurkers can't download anything).

Do you know what I got? I got permabanned the very next day with no reason given.

    • Yeah, they'll do that. Anyone seen complaining about the event in any regard gets perma'd because they see it as toxic behaviour.

As a side note, please remember to follow the filename guidelines for images that aren't going to be used in the mainspace; you can also upload your images to Imgur and paste the direct image link to embed them.
